It was a day of sport and giving back to the community as the Rotary Club of Accra Airport organized a charity golf tournament to raise funds for the refurbishment of the Sickle Cell Unit at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Held at the Achimota golf course in Accra, the event brought together golf enthusiasts and philanthropists as well as members of the Rotary Club of Accra Airport to raise funds for various charitable projects spearheaded by the Club.
Golfers across the region showcased their skills on the lush greens while contributing to a noble cause. They included business leaders, diplomats, and members of the local community, all united in their support for charitable initiatives.
Aside from golfing, attendees engaged in networking opportunities and shared moments of fellowship.

Proceeds from the charity golf tournament will be directed towards the Rotary Club of Accra Airport’s projects focused on education, healthcare, and community development. These initiatives aim to positively impact the lives of individuals and families in need across Ghana.

Speaking to Raymond News, the president of the Rotary Club of Accra Airport, Rotarian Peace Akwei spoke about the chosen discipline.

“As a golfer myself, I knew I could get a good number of golfers to support this tournament, which was meant to raise funds to refurbish the Sickle Cell Unit at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. I know a few people with Sickle Cell issues and the pain they go through and it has been my wish to help to alleviate the pain they go through with better amenities at the Centre”
Selection of Charities by the Rotary Club of Accra Airport
Speaking on how the club selects the charities that will benefit from the proceeds of the tournament, Rotarian president Peace Akwei said “ Every year, it is up to the President of the Rotary Club to choose projects which would benefit the community based on the various avenues of Rotary. I sold this idea to my Club as part of our projects for the year and members embraced it as a sustainable project”
Appreciation to Corporate Sponsors

The Rotarian president expressed her appreciation to sponsors and volunteers whose generosity and commitment made the tournament possible. The lead sponsor is Ghana Commercial Bank, followed by the World Health Organization (WHO), SIC-Life Ltd, McAdam Design, and Phyto-Riker (GIHOC).
Impact of funds on the selected charities
Touching on what impact the funds raised will have on the selected charities, Rotarian President Peace Akwei said the contributions will enable the Rotary Club of Accra Airport to continue its mission of service above self and make a difference in the community.
“I’m happy to say that we have been able to achieve our target. We have started procuring Recliner chairs, Window blinds, Lighting, IV Stands, Overbed Tables, POP materials, and other requisite items for the wards. These are all meant for the comfort of the patients who visit the Sickle Cell Unit during crisis”
The continuous expectation

According to Rotarian Peace Akwei, “the Rotary Club of Accra-Airport (RCAA) over the years, has been known for undertaking impactful projects all over the country – building bridges, building boreholes, renovating and equipping hospitals, assisting schools with books, providing potable water to remote areas, assisting women with Micro-financing, training street children, planting trees, building solar energy shelters, etc. We plan to continue with these services and projects in subsequent years”
Conclusion

As the sun set on the golf course, participants departed with a sense of fulfillment, knowing that their involvement in the tournament would help support meaningful projects that uplift and empower those in need. The Rotary Club of Accra Airport looks forward to hosting more events that combine sportsmanship with philanthropy in the future.
