Background

Raymond News, an online media outlet was among the media participants at the recent training workshop hosted by First National Bank.

The two-day training workshop was held in Accra at the University of Media, Arts, and Communication(UniMAC) campus. The focus of the workshop was to equip journalists with the necessary skills in news reporting and financial reporting.

What transpired

At the workshop, I (Raymond Rex Awiagah) engaged in discussions and practical exercises tailored to deciphering and analyzing financial data.

Important to realize that, the workshop was led by seasoned financial analysts Dr. Nixon K. Kariithi who is also the CEO of Tangaza Africa Media in South Africa, and  Dr. Kobina Bedu-Addo (Ph.D.), the Dean- of the Faculty of Journalism and Media Studies, UniMAC-GIJ.

They shared some practical tips and case studies to illustrate the application of financial data in news stories.

The Impact

To begin with, the workshop provided a deeper understanding of financial news reporting. This will enhance my capacity to produce insightful and impactful news stories related to finance and economics.

Equally important, the session afforded me and the journalists from other media outlets to ask questions and engage in interactive sessions, fostering a dynamic learning environment. Topics covered ranged from understanding key financial metrics to identifying red flags in corporate financial reports, the use of Artificial intelligence in modern-day journalism, and more.
