In a shocking turn of event , Ghana’s minister for sanitation Cecilia Dapaah, fell victim to theft at her own residence.  It was revealed that two of her own house helps she trusted betrayed her and stole monies and goodies worth millions of cash. The fast trending news has left many in shock . While others are  raising questions about security, some are talking about trust in the domestic environment. Others too are asking how the minister could keep such an amount in her residence. The Profile of Cecilia Dapaah

First of all,  it’s important to know more about Cecilia Dapaah. Minister Cecilia Dapaah is a prominent public figure who holds an important role in the the Akufo Addo government. She is the minister for Sanitation in Ghana. As a minister, she is responsible for various initiatives that will help improve the sanitation and hygiene in Ghana.  Minister Cecilia Dapaah has worked as a minister under the presidency of former president J.A Kuffour in the early 2000 and she is known  for her dedication and strong leadership skills .

The Background Story

Minister Cecilia Dapaah entrusted her residency  to two of her house helps. The two- one a former house help and the second currently working at the residency of the minister. They have been undertaking various house chores as well as daily day-to-day activities. For the minister,  little did she know that this trust she entrusted in the house help would be taken advantage of. 

The Unfortunate Theft

The alleged thefts occurred between July and October 2022. During this period, the house helps allegedly stole personal effects belonging to Madam Cecilia Dapaah, including assorted clothes valued at GH¢95,000, handbags, perfumes, and jewelry worth US$95,000.

The accused individuals, 18-year-old Patience Botwe and 30-year-old Sarah Agyei, have been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and five counts of stealing. Additionally,  Ms. Botwe is accused of stealing six pieces of Kente cloth worth GH¢90,000 and six sets of men’s suits valued at US$3,000, which belong to the minister’s husband.

Furthermore, three other individuals, identified as Ms. Botwe’s current and former boyfriends and her father, are also facing charges for allegedly being involved in the crime. They have been respectively charged with dishonestly receiving GH¢1 million, GH¢180,000, and GH¢50,000.

Betrayal of Trust

As the police launched investigation into the matter,  it became evident that the two house helps were involved in the act of stealing the minister.  The actions by the two house help was a clear betrayal of the trust bestowed upon them by the Minister Cecilia Dapaah . The two house helps had access to the Minister’s personal room which made it easier for them to carry out the act.

Public Outrage and Security Concerns

The news of the incident went viral like a Chinese’s whispers which spark outrage among Ghanaians. Many in the public have expressed disappointment in the minister for keeping possession of such amount in her residency. Others also raise concern over the lack of security in domestic settings, especially for prominent figures like Minister  Cecilia Dapaah. Key important question is what is the vetting process for domestic staffs working at the residences of key public figures?.

Going-forward, there is the need for enhanced security measures in such environments.

Currently, minister Cecilia Dapaah is going through a lot of  emotional distress as a result of the theft. It has also had a significant implications on her work as a Minister. With personal belongings stolen by people she trust and a breach of privacy, her focus and dedication to her public duties will be affected. Despite the incident, she remains  focused and committed to serving her country. 

Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Following the incident, the Ghanaian police acted swiftly, apprehending the two house helps involved in the theft. They are now facing legal proceedings for their actions. The case has gained significant media attention in Ghana. According to court proceedings, the stolen monies and items belonged to Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah and her husband.

Afterwards, the accused individuals were arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Susana Ekuful, on Thursday, July 20, 2023. However, their pleas have not been taken yet.

However, the court granted bail to Sarah Agyei in the sum of GH¢1 million with two sureties. The sureties are required to deposit their Ghana cards with the court’s registrar. The bail conditions are subject to review by the substantive judge, as Susana Ekuful was serving as a relief judge.

Also, Ms. Botwe, along with her alleged boyfriends and father, have been remanded into lawful custody. The complainants reported the theft case to the police in June 2023 after discovering the missing cash and personal effects. Ms. Botwe was caught red-handed entering the couple’s room with a duplicate key, leading to her arrest.

Restoring Trust and Security Measures

All in all, the theft at the residence of Minister Cecilia Dapaah has highlighted the need for stringent background checks and security protocols to be followed when next hiring domestic staff. 

The case as at now

Further investigations revealed that Patience, with the help of her alleged accomplice Sarah, had hidden the stolen money and used it to purchase properties and expensive items. The case is adjourned to August 2, 2023, as the court continues its proceedings to determine the fate of the accused individuals.
