Background

First National Bank has organized a two-day workshop in Accra for Journalists on Financial Reporting. The initiative dubbed First National Bank Journalism Academy was in partnership with the University of Media, Arts, and Communication(UniMAC). It centered on the most effective utilization of financial statements in news reporting.
The rationale
The training workshop which took place at the UniMAC campus brought together journalists from various media outlets as well as some student journalists from UniMAC. The training provided insight and skills for accurate and insightful reporting on financial issues and stories.

Participants were taken through the intricacies of financial statements income statements, determining the angles of news stories, and how to write financial news for the ordinary people to understand among others.
The New Knowledge

Facilitators, including seasoned financial analyst Dr. Nixon K. Kariithi who is also the CEO of Tangaza Africa Media in South Africa, and seasoned journalist Dr. Kobina Bedu-Addo (Ph.D) who is also the Dean- of the Faculty of Journalism and Media Studies, UniMAC-GIJ, shared some practical tips and case studies to illustrate the application of financial data in news stories.
Focus Areas of Workshop
The session also allowed the journalist to ask questions and engage in interactive sessions, fostering a dynamic learning environment. Topics covered ranged from understanding key financial metrics to identifying red flags in corporate financial reports, the use of Artificial intelligence in modern-day journalism, and more.

Strategic move from First National Bank
FNB Bank's initiative is to enhance financial literacy in journalism in Ghana. Officials from First National Bank expressed the hope that the knowledge gained from the workshop would empower journalists to produce high-quality, insightful reporting on financial matters, ultimately benefiting the public.
